Round One of the 2017 WA Downhill Series was a held on the weekend, with over 110 competitors. Another great turn out for the first round of the year!

Thanks to all our volunteers, including marshals, registration desk staff, and timing crew.  Thanks also to PDMBC for their assistance on the day!

Thanks also to the Albany Roller Derby League for keeping everyone fed.  Check out their website for upcoming events.

Saturday practice was pretty hectic, with the medics certainly earning their money.  The final shoot before the finish line seemed to push most riders, many competitors clipping their bars or cranks.  Chris Deeks did his best to remove one of the trees with his head (but all good, he was back to race the next morning).  Thankfully everyone had calmed down by race day!

Kudos goes to Vilma Fitzgerald for taking a heavy fall on the hip, followed by a trip to hospital, only to come back the next day to finish 3rd in Elite Women.

Albany riders took out many of the podium spots, including Hamish Wilkes (Under 13 FIRST), Sophie Adeline (Junior Women SECOND), Lachlan Wilkes (Under 17 THIRD – in a huge field), Jane Devenport (Sport Women THIRD), Tim Harman (Sport Men FIRST), Mitch Poett (Sport Men THIRD), Bryn Westerberg (Single Crown FIRST), Nathan Devenport (Veteran Men THIRD), Josh Pearson (Masters Men SECOND), Paul Fage (Super Masters Men, SECOND), Andrew Hannig (Expert Men SECOND), Natalie Pearson (Elite Women SECOND, against some international competition).

An amazing finish saw Albany riders end up with 1/2 on the Elite Men’s podium, with Ben Halsall being beaten by Bobby Cooper on the last race run of the day!
